Pros +
- The free breakfast was great. Definitely a huge plus for someone who is to busy to stop and make/get something to eat otherwise.
- The Tani house and staff are so kind! As a women traveling alone I was really scared, but they made my stay really comfortable. I got lost on the way there and they helped me out so much. Included free breakfast and the house was super cozy. Definitely would stay here again!
- I loved the owner. She is super friendly! Also the location is next to Imamiya-jinja Shrine. My favourite Shrine in Kyoto!
Cons -
- It was a little difficult to find, but once I did, it was easy to keep track of.
- Its a little run down so be prepared!
- It's a bit far from Kyoto Station, but that's a plus because it’s quiet, and its closed to Kinkaku-Ji Templ, the bus stop is only 5 minutes from Tani's

Tani is incredibly kind, greeting me with a warm smile and a cup of matcha when I checked in. The house is lovely, and my room offers that authentic Japanese experience I was hoping for. I really appreciate how she takes care of all the details for her guests, which makes my stay even more special. She even provides breakfast, even if it’s from 7-Eleven — it’s truly the thought that counts. If you're staying here, I encourage you to keep an open mind and just enjoy the wonderful experience. Considering the price, I think it’s absolutely worth it.

The house was a really old and historic home with such a vibe! I loved Tani, the owner of the house, who made us a delicious and beautiful traditional Japanese breakfast every morning. She was so sweet and made us feel at home. We rented a bicycle from Tani for 800yen per day and rode our bikes everywhere around Kyoto to sightsee. The best way to see Kyoto!
Its a traditional Japanese Home. The Grandma who owns it is very hands on that she prepares the delicious breakfast on her own. I suggest you take the 1day unli bus ride ticket so you can explore Kyoto via bus. There's a grocery near the place where we buy our dinner.
Lovely location and a nice homey feeling. Made the trip experience feel authentic and intimate with friendly hosts. Breakfast was yummy every day we were there!
Nice people running the guest house.
The thin walls. The cleanliness and rats in the attic above.
I stayed here decades ago and it hasn’t changed much at all.
The charm of Tani house is not for everyone. It’s an old house built on a traditional basis with thin sliding shoji doors and walls. No acoustic privacy.
Madam Tani was an incredible host.Together with her daughter she runs her house as a guest house. She does prepare a very good breakfast in the morning, accommodating guests time. They offer rent bike and the room I stayed in was spacious and very clean. Loved it.Absolutely recommended to anyone that passes through Kyoto. On a side note, it’s not central located so consider walking long distances or commute - both good option to explore!
If you are looking for international connection and Japanese hospitality this is the place for you. Your host will serve up a thoughtful breakfast each morning and the close quarters will undoubtably bring you new friends. But privacy is lacking as the walls are thin and the bathroom spaces feel very communal by necessity.
I loved the location. I loved Ms. Tani's warm smile and sweet conversation. It was very sweet of her to prepare breakfast for us with love in the morning (although my children do not like Japanese style breakfast). Our room was beautiful, a real riokan style, the beds provided a better sleep than any bed I slept in during my trip to Japan. In short, if you do not have great luxury expectations, this experience may be good for you.
It wouldn't be bad if a separate company or employee was hired for cleaning and a detailed dust cleaning was done. Also, the pillows should be renewed. Other than that, it was fine, I'm glad I spent 2 days of my Jyoto trip here.
A very quaint and traditional Japanese experience.
Cleanliness could be better but wholly understandable considering the old woman who runs the place on her own. So if you’re sensitive about dust and germs or squeamish, then you won’t enjoy it.
The lady is very sweet and friendly. The room feels cozy and warm.
The house itself could be tidier and better maintained. The first impression is not great.
The home cooked breakfast was such a plus when I was sick of eating out in town. The owners were the nicest people I have met so far.
The owner is an old woman who is super kind and lovely. She waited for us until late at night even if she had to wake up earlier the next day.She prepared breakfast for us the whole stay. The house is super old style japanese and the futons were very comfortable. She also received us with delicious marcha and skauramochi.Thank you!Very convenient for catching buses.
Nothing at all
Tani was an incredible host and it was a pleasure to stay in a traditional Japanese home in one of the nicest areas of Kyoto. Her breakfast was more than filling and she treats her guests with respect and care. Of all my experiences in Kyoto, staying in her home was my favorite.
Tani-san is a really great person, very welcoming! She prepared a japanese breakfast every day with many different flavours. You can enjoy your stay in Kyoto to the fullest. The guest house is surrounded by nature and not far from Funaokayama where you can enjoy the view of Kyoto. It is also easily accessible from Kyoto Station from bus.
I really enjoyed the character and charm of this place. It’s an old guesthouse that’s been run by the same family for generations, which made it feel special and authentic. If you want to support local families instead of big hotel chains, this is the perfect spot. My partner and I had a wonderful time, and we’re really glad we gave it a chance.
That said, it’s not for everyone. The place isn’t the cleanest, and you might find some dust or insects around. If you’re expecting a polished, modern environment, you might be disappointed. But if you’re not too fussy and can appreciate the charm despite these quirks, it’s a unique experience worth having.
Tani and the other woman running the guesthouse are the kindest and most friendly women. They were excellent hosts with great customer service. The house was beautiful and very traditional it was a really nice experience. We came in hot one day and she brought us some ice cream and ice tea. I would definitely go back.
